Recalling the Lake Peigneur Disaster
"Drill Baby Drill"
On November 21st, 1980, Texaco oil rig operators miscalculated their drilling location and punctured the roof of the Diamond Crystal Salt Company beneath the lake. Several billion gallons of lake water poured in through the hole, which widened as the rushing water dissolved the sorrounding salt, creating a whirlpool that sucked in two drilling platforms, eleven barges, trees and tons of previously dry land. The mine's salt walls started dissolving and 55 miners barely got out with their lives. The 11 foot deep fresh water lake popular with sportsmen became a salt water lake with a 1,300 foot hole, destroying 65 acres of sorrounding terrain. Read more...
